To be human is to be natural, a part of nature and our surroundings.
Humans often look at nature through a distant window; however, nature is an integral part of the human experience. I find respect for nature is a strong influence in my work. There is a certain appeal in trying to understand nature and I search for that understanding. Since we are all part of the natural world, it only makes sense to explore what makes us human and how we reflect that on our natural world. In doing so, I create glass masks from molds of real people’s faces, and look to my spirituality, my experiences in nature, and a desire to understand human experience to display my ideas and thoughts through my art.
Art is something created to challenge a viewer’s perspective as it should inspire feelings, ideas, and encourage a viewer to look at artistic expression in a new way. My work speaks to the spirit of the observer and encourages them to explore the effects that has on them. I look for viewers who will appreciate the different method for glass work, and those that can feel the emotion and ideas that my multimedia glass sculptures try to create.
A Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, Jon Larsen graduated from Towson University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary arts, where he found his love of glass. He has shown his unique sculptures throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area in various group shows as a member of the National Capital Art Glass Guild (www.ncagg.org) as well as group shows throughout the U.S. His most recent solo show called “Nature Personified”, opened in the Art Center in Orange in 2023. Jon has had his work shown in several international publications. He currently works in a small home studio in Culpeper, Virginia.
